About products and suppliers

Be it indoors or outdoors, the bench is often the place where conversations start. A wooden picnic bench for a family gathering or a modern wood bench in the living room can go a long way toward making each environment more comfortable and welcoming. That being said, each type of wood bench has its own features that must be taken into account when choosing the right one for your business.

Types of woods

The type of wood used will determine the bench’s overall load capacity, structural integrity, weight, cost, use, and resistance against weather damage and insects. A wooden storage bench, for example, might require lighter, easier to work with wood to articulate the moving parts while still being strong enough to handle a couple of people sitting on it.

The two main types of wood for furniture-making are soft and hardwood. Softwood refers to timbers made from coniferous trees, which tend to grow faster and produce wood that is softer and less dense. This makes it a lighter alternative that is easy to work with and process, being used directly in furniture, such as in a wood entryway bench, or processed to create particleboards. Some of the most popular examples of softwood include cedar, rosewood, and pine. Hardwood, on the other hand, comes from trees that grow much slower, allowing for a denser, stronger pattern to form in the wood. Thanks to their toughness, hardwoods are commonly found in stationary furniture pieces, such as in a wooden garden bench. Acacia, mango, and teak benches are commonplace in parks and other outdoor environments, which can take full advantage of the hardwood material.

Wooden benches for outdoors and indoors

Besides the material used, there are many differences between outdoor and indoor benches. For starters, an outdoor wooden bench will be exposed to weather damage, be it UV light damaging the paint or moisture loosening the wood, and thus needs a way to remedy and prevent such things. Hardwood furniture, such as a teak outdoor bench, works better than softwood against the weather, considering softwoods have a less dense grain structure that is prone to absorbing moisture, deforming, and rotting when exposed to the elements. For these reasons, softwood works best for furniture in low-maintenance, closed environments, such as an indoor wooden bench.

Maintenance and care for long-lasting wooden benches

To avoid most damages, both hard and softwood have to be treated with a sealant from time to time, which can vary from a yearly application to a specialized treatment every three months, depending on the wood. This greatly extends the lifetime of the bench, with everything from a rustic bench to a live edge bench being able to last decades outdoors with the right maintenance.
