A magnetic tape is a strip made from a non-metallic magnetic material known as ferrite. It’s then encased with a plastic binding material. Its strong adhesion, flexibility and versatility make it a great alternative to conventional adhesive tapes. While it’s widely used in commercial spaces, it also comes in handy for home DIY and craft projects.
Magnetic tapes come in various adhesive types, lengths, widths and thicknesses. Adhesive backed strips feature a flexible adhesive layer at the back and magnetic in front. This is ideal for non-ferromagnetic surfaces. Plain magnetic tape doesn’t have an adhesive backing and can only be used on ferromagnetic surfaces like nickel and iron.
The lifespan of a mag tape depends on various factors, including temperature, humidity, sun exposure, surface type and more. It can last between a few months to years. But if maintained under optimal conditions, it can last even longer.
It’s important to clean the work surface before sticking the adhesive magnetic tape. Dirty, oily, rusty, dusty and even rough surfaces can cause air gaps to develop, reducing its effectiveness. Get a strip that can hold the size and weight of the item(s)or material(s). Strong magnetic strips are ideal for heavy-duty projects like warehouse shelving, displaying artwork and mounting tools. For lighter weight applications such as signage and DIY craft projects, a standard self-adhesive magnetic tape will work just fine. You can also use two thin magnetic strips to reinforce the holding power.
There are sticky magnetic strips specially designed for outdoor use. These strips are usually thick and rustproof with a rubber based adhesive front and magnetic back. However, wet environments and exposure to UV radiation can weaken the material over time. Hence, they may need to be replaced from time to time.
