Landscape fabric is an outdoor landscaping material used as a weed barrier essentially by limiting the weed’s exposure to sunlight. Weed barrier fabric is a creative and effective solution for landscapers and home gardeners who have unwanted vegetation growth and want a simple solution for controlling and eliminating that growth.

What is Landscape Fabric?

Landscape fabric is a weed control fabric that is constructed from a textile material. The textile material can be made from synthetic, organic or recycled materials. It is typically sold in rolls at varying lengths and widths, allowing for users to easily customize length as needed using a simple cutting tool like scissors. The garden fabric can be made from woven or non-woven materials. Woven weed fabric is manufactured with tiny holes and is water permeable allowing the area underneath to receive watering but not sunlight. Non-woven weed block fabric is generally not water permeable and often used under hardscapes or ponds or other areas where water underneath is not desirable.

What is Landscape Fabric Used For?

Landscape fabric is primarily used as a weed block. In addition to blocking weeds, landscape fabric can be used to moderate ground temperature and moisture and control erosion. In the summer, weed fabric will keep the ground under the fabric cooler and in the winter, warmer. Weed control fabric can be used under mulched areas, around trees or bushes, flowerbeds, gardens and even hardscapes.

How is Landscape Fabric Used?

There are four primary steps to using landscape fabric. Once the material is acquired, Prepare the site by removing any existing vegetation or weeds. Next, prepare the soil by removing rocks and flattening out the preparation area. Then, lay the weed barrier fabric and trim any excess fabric. Finally, secure the fabric using staples, nails or rocks and top with mulch, soil or hardscape material.
