An AV cable is an electrical connector for transmitting audiovisual signals. Via AV cord, many multimedia devices connect to output displays such as TVs, monitors, and LCDs. Different types of AV cables are available depending on the number of sound and video channels. Also, newer types allow choosing based on control signals, signal quality, and applications.

How do AV cords work?

AV cables transmit audiovisual signals from one device to another. One end of the cable connects to the display devices (DVD player or console) via jacks, and the other end connects to the output display (TV or Monitor) via jacks/connectors compatible with the device. A common type is the composite AV cable or standard RCA cable, which has three color-coded connectors: red, white, and yellow. The red and white connectors transmit left and right audio signals, whereas the yellow connector carries video signals. What are the different types of AV cables?

Apart from composite AV cables, the S-Video Cable has a round connector with pins that solely transmit video signals by separating them into brightness and color channels. These help enhance video quality but are now obsolete as older TVs had ports for them, and the latest displays use HDMI. To deal with this, AV adapter is used for conversion from AV to HDMI. Coaxial AV cables transmit audio and video signals for broadcast applications and satellite TVs. They are used in the cable industry because they can transmit audio and video and directly connect to the cable box. HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) Cables carry digital format high-definition audiovisual signals. For devices like Blu-ray players, HDTVs, and laptops, HDMI is a standard that supports higher resolutions, even UHD (4K). To connect laptops with older displays, an HDMI to AV adapter does the digital to analog conversion.
